In case anybody missed it at E3, Skyrim is getting its first major expansion and its focused on one of my favorite aspects of the game. VAMPIRES.

The expansion adds several new areas and an epic new questline similar to the civil war story. Except in this scenario, you choose between becoming a Vampire Lord or leading Skyrim's elite group of Vampire Hunters, the Dawnsguard. Expect new areas, sidequests, perks, abilities, weapons (Dragonbone Weapons w00000t), armor, new dragons! and CASTLES.

Storyline apparently involves Vampires trying to use the Elder Scrolls to permanently blot out the sun! Sounds fucking awsesome.

Heres some screenies.

This is the new Vampire Lord transformation, using the Vader-esque "Levitate and absorb blood" move Also, the bats swirling around in the background is a new "summon bats" spell

And hers a new weapon class… Crossbows! same perk tree as archery I believe.

Since my cable is still not turned on, and I even had a couple days off due to July 4th, Ive been playing a ton of Skyrim. Following is a story of my recent exploits, intended to re-affirm faith in SKyrim as possibly the greatest offline game EVER. dont care whats you say Ace =P

So yea, the vampire stuff is really cool, but the best part of this DLC is something I read in a book. A BOOK I found on a nightstand in some dungeon I was exploring. It described the end of the ancient Dwarven culture, and how they may have possibly extincted themselves during a giant civil war over a new method of forging weapons. After reading the book, I got the "Map updated" on my screen and began scanning for a new, unexplored location. Sure, there is already still 20 or so unexplored marks on my map, but I saw that Arkingthamz immediately. A brand new BIG Dwarven city to explore. Fucking sweet.

After meeting the ghost who dedicated her life AND afterlife to finding this "Aetherium Forge, she led me to the first shard, which we determined to be part of a key. The other 4 pieces must be somewhere in the world…most likely in Dwarven ruins. Ghost had a journal that showed the locations, only problem is it was drawn based on Dwarven locations and landmarks, now 4000yrs old and hardly resembling the modern world at all. I took a loose reading and made a guess which led me to Alftand, a MAJOR Dwarven city located in the center of the continent.

Yup, Alftand was pretty cool, but it didnt have any shards. WHat laid underneath Alftand, however, was the BEST part of my entire 3 day journey. Blackreach.

Oh. Fuck. Yes. Blackreach. We are talking a gigantic subterranean cave network that is approximately half the size of the area of Skyrim above. Walls aglow with the with blue-hued Aetherium, large veins of the ore lighting the walls and ceilings, A strange red form of the ultra rare Nirnroot, Skyscraper height Mushrooms, about as epic as an underground cave can get. Epic cant even do it justice, it was like an entire underground CONTINENT. I couldnt even see where it ended. What I DID see, after clearing out a warring pack of giants, Falmer, and Dwarmen Animunculi, was a huge glowing bulb like an artificial sun, and an enormous purple mushroom that reached to the ceiling. Yup, Im going that way.

I found a small hut that once belonged to an alchemist, studying the red nirnroots. If I can find 30 of them and deliver them to his apprentice, I might get something good. Kept an eye out for the red glow the plants cast and hum they sounded.

As I approached the artificial sun and its neighbor the purple mushroom, I was struck by the beauty of a perfectly preserved Dwarven Metropolis. Upon breaching the walls I found a Rumination Hall, A debate Hall, War Quarters, Pumping Stations, everything a center of government would need. I spent close to 2 hours trying to reach the top of a column that rose above our artificial sun, and when I did I was greeted by a well stocked treasure chest and a stone throne that overlooked the entire city and some of the caves below them. After clearing the city as much as I could find, I continued South, outside the city again and into the darkness beyond.

After travelling south and killing several previously unknown beast, the flying Chaurus hunters and Wispmothers, I reached another elevator. This one was labeled "Irkingthanz". Sweet, I had never been in that one. Almost immediately upon reaching the top of the lift, I was beset by an entire army of Dwarven Animunculi, complete with a Centurion Master, that kicked my ass 4 or 5 times until I found enough room to put some distance between them and my bow. After clearing the room I found my glowing prize behind a masterlocked gate, my 2nd piece of the Aetherium Key.

The next two were found similarly to the last, except without the incredible exploration of Blackreach. Alftand where I entered is at the north tip of Skyrim, close to SOlitude, and Irkngthanz where I left is near Riversmeet. I covered almost the entirety of the continent underground. Sick.

Once I had all 4 keys it was time for me to find the Forge itself. Now that I knew the other 4 spots on the ghost's map, the 5th was a well educated guess, and I fast traveled directly to it. After putting the keys in their holes, the lock mechaniosm shot into the sky and revealed an elevator leading deep underground.

This was it, The Aetherium Forge. I was forced to fight off at least 10 waves off all types of dwarven constructs, until finally the Forgemaster emerged from the lava behind the forge.

a 50 foot tall Brass Giant breathing flames that melted my vampiress friend in one shot. Luckily I had enough room between it and my bow, and it smashed to the ground.

The key I had used was the only remaining Aetherium in the world, so I would smelt it to make an item of my choice. A Staff, a Shield, or a circlet.

I emerged from the Forge proudly wearing my glowing circlet, and it grants me the ability to use the power of two Guardian Stones simultaneously. Epic Reward.

Seriously though, I cant remember the last time I had such an adventure. Skyrim kicks fucking ass, and even though I have three or four other offline games I have to beat still, none of them would have offered up that caliber of adventure. Piss off Ace, Skyrim is possibly the greatest game ever made.

lol that sounds really awesome. I should get back into it soon :) I haven't done much of the regular game though, would you recommend going through that before getting DLC?

I also need to finish FF13-2 and pick up that Dragon's Dogma game haha
