Today I should be receiving in the mail my copy of FFIV: The Complete Collection.
I am STOKED. This was not only my very first Final Fantasy, but I am pretty sure it was my first RPG, and I can say without hesitation that it changed my life, opened my eyes to the xperiences that videogames could offer, it just blew me away when I realized what videogames could achieve as a storytelling medium. I immediately stopped reading books and began tracking down every RPG I could find.
While 6 was probably my favorite of alltime, I cannot understate the impact 4 has had on my conception of videogames.
I remember when I was playing that first scene where Cecil is being talked to in bed by the chick, was her name Celes? My babysitter was like "omg this is like a little Soap Opera". I was 10, my sitter was 19 and smokin hot, and she sat and watched the story develop all the way until Cecil is betrayed, and it was awesome.
If you have never played it before I cant recommend it highly enough, but the main point of this thread is to explore if any of you have had a similar experience with other games.
In the mid 1980's a small Japanese game developer called Square entered the video game industry with simple RPGs, racing games, and platformers for Nintendo's Famicon. In 1987 Square was facing bankruptcy and the now legendary Hironobu Sakaguchi was considering ending his video game career early and returning to University if his next project was a flop. It was for these reasons that the team's creation became their end-all be-all, their last hope, and it was aptly named… their Final Fantasy.
My first RPG was actually Final Fantasy 1. My cousin was playing it and let me borrow it when he finally got bored with it. The one thing that sticks out the most, and fully hooked on FF, was when the my characters "turned big". When they evolved, they went from the tiny blockish toons to sharper edged, taller toons. For some reason that was stuck with me all this time. That and the airship lol. When the Super Nintendo came out I of course played the shit out of FF2 and FF3. I missed out on 4-6 when i was young for some reason and started back with FF7 on the playstation. And ive now played them all but 13-2, which Im finishing up 13 again before I start it. Im way behind I know. I wont touch our FF13-2 forum for that reason lol.
First one i played was 9, never finished it, always got to black mage village are got bored to shit. FFX was my game, i played that to death, 100% everything done penance defeated all that shit, that game was the best, cant wait for FF10 remake
O Roland, If you played Final Fantasy 2 and 3 on SNES, they are actually Final Fantasy 4 and 6 respectively. We named them 2 and 3 just because they were the second and third NA releases, but they were actually the 4th and 6th in the series.
