This morning I heard about some internet blackout going on throughout the US and other parts of North America. Some major players in question include Wikipedia, Reddit, Mozilla, and Google.
Essentially what's going on is that "SOPA" in the US are trying to pass a law that allows big name corporations and such to tear down any website/information from the internet that they please, without trial and without notification.
All those songs and movies you're DLing? Gone. All that information on anything and everything you see on sites like Wikipedia, etc? Gone. All that dirt you're digging up on the latest Hollywood celebs? Gone. etc, etc
This goes so far as that your site will be removed for even providing LINKS to other sources/sites that offer pirated downloads or information, even if you are not affiliated with them in any way.
Welcome to the USSR home of the old country. Get your butter turners out time to make mlords money. I have seen so much taken from the americans we'll see if this one goes to
Both of NY senators are on board! I wrote them emails, called em up, signed the petitions, etc.
As of this post they are not sending the bills to be voted on, and are re-writing them to be less broad. The Legislators intended them to target non-US websites that distribute US-based content, but the way the idiots wrote the law was so any DNS linking to illegal content was summarily banned from US access, until a court order lifted said ban.
Imagine logging on one day to see that Google, YouTube, Twitter, Wikipedia, Facebook, and any other website that had a LINK to an illegal site like PiratesBay buried somewhere in it's user comments, GONE. Thats what makes this law a big problem.
All 4 GOP candidates went on record saying they opposed the bill last night, there was millions of angry protest mails and calls, and the bill came down without even being voted on, so we are safe for the moment =)
